Five & Dime Sale

As part of the recently announced reorganization efforts, the Society of St Vincent de Paul will be holding a “Five and Dime” Garage / Liquidation Sale

When:     Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9 am to 4pm at

Where:     715 Beitner Street, Traverse City, MI (across the street from the Traverse City Area District Library on Woodmere Ave.

Most items except jewelry and other select items will be offered for sale based on whatever can be fit in a box.  A smaller box will be $5 (12″ x 12″ x 12″) and a larger box will be $10 (18″ x 18″ x 18″).  Food and beverages will be available for sale and donations are always welcome.  All proceeds go to help the needy in the community.

Board President Margaret Sophiea stated that “The five and dime theme plays off of the old-fashioned, 1950’s style variety stores where everything in the store used to cost a dime.  Think Woolworth, Ben Franklin or Kresge.  They also used to be called dime stores, or 5 and 10’s.”  Jokingly, Sophiea added “With inflation, we now call them dollar stores.  We are attempting to coordinate the event with other area businesses to make it more of a neighborhood event.”

Same Thing = Insanity

If you’re still doing the same thing you were doing at this time last year — and nothing’s changed (or maybe has even gotten worse) — then you might want to check out what none other than Albert Einstein said about that.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and  expecting different results”.   – Albert Einstein  (often times attributed to Ben Franklin as well)

Mail Carrier Food Drive

20thAnnual Mail Carrier Food Drive – Saturday May 12, 2012

Postal carriers unite to help fill local food pantries in Northwest Michigan.

Local members of the NACL, NRCA and U.S. Postal Service will collect food for Northwest Food Coaltion affiliated food pantries serving the five-county region.  Participating mail carriers will be dropping off flyers in mailboxes in the next few weeks with details.Food donations are generally made by leaving bags of non-perishable food near your mailbox on Saturday, May 12, 2012.  If your mail carrier is not participating, you may also drop off donations on Saturday, May 12th at any post office during regular business hours or from 2pm to 6pm at the old Lear Corporation building in Traverse City located at the intersection of South Airport and LaFranier roads.

Volunteers are always welcome.  We need strong and energetic bodies to help load and organize the tons of collected food.  This might be a good event for a sports team or other school/civic organization (Boy Scouts, church youth group, etc.).  Since this is an active event with many moving parts, students, family & friends age 13 and up are encouraged!  For more information contact Val Stone at 231-995-7722 or vals@goodwillnmi.org.  The St. Vincent de Paul contact is Jim Casler at 231-218-7525 or jimcasler@gmail.com.

Quote of the Day

Failure is the hallmark of success. It can be the starting point of a new venture, such as when a baby learns to walk; it has to fall down a lot to learn the new skill. Failure is also the mark of a success you’ve worked for. When a pole vaulter finally misses in competition, it shows how far he’s come. That failure becomes the starting point for his next effort, proving that failure is not final!
